Spain, sun, sea and breathtaking landscapes: both the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands are among the most popular destinations in Europe. But what are the differences? Which one is best for you? Let's find out together, with pros and cons to help you choose the island of your dreams!
Canary Islands: an eternal spring between volcanoes and ocean
Where they are found: off the coast of Africa, in the Atlantic Ocean. They include islands such as Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma, La Gomera...
Pros:
Perfect climate all year round: mild even in winter, ideal for a sunny escape even in December.
Diverse and surprising landscapes: from the long beaches of Fuerteventura to the lunar volcanoes of Lanzarote, to the tropical forests of La Gomera.
Ideal for hiking, nature, outdoor sports: trekking, surfing, paragliding, whale watching.
Excellent value for money, especially compared to other European destinations.
Against:
Frequent wind, especially in Fuerteventura and Lanzarote.
Beaches often of dark sand (of volcanic origin), less “Caribbean” in appearance.
Car rental almost essential to explore the larger islands.
Balearics: Mediterranean between glamour, tradition and turquoise coves
Where they are: in the Mediterranean Sea, in front of the eastern coast of Spain. The main ones are Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera.
Pros:
Crystal clear waters and picture-postcard beaches, especially in Formentera and Menorca.
Rich gastronomy, lively local culture: authentic villages, artisan markets, traditional festivals.
The perfect combination of relaxation and nightlife: Ibiza is the queen of clubbing, but also of chic relaxation.
Closer and easier to reach from continental Europe.
Against:
Very crowded in high season (July and August).
Higher prices, especially in Ibiza and Formentera.
Hot and muggy summers, less pleasant for those seeking mild temperatures.
Bottom line: Which one is right for you?
